Important info concerning our trip to Uganda:
Flight Info:
Our flight leaves DFW at 6:40pm on Friday July 22nd. We will need to leave Glenwood no later than 1:00pm. Please make sure you eat lunch before you come and arrive early enough to load all your bags on the bus.
Our flight to Doha Qatar will be about 16 hours long with a 15 hour overnight layover in Doha Qatar. The flight to Entebbe will be about 5 hours long.
Travel Groups:
We will be breaking everyone up into 3 travel groups with a leader for each group. These leaders will handle all flight check ins, boarding passes, and passports to avoid mass chaos at the terminal. Please note it is our desire to keep all the passports together so that we don’t lose one.
Luggage:
Everyone will receive two checked bags (up to 50 pounds each) free of charge.
We will have a layover in Doha Qatar both coming and going to Uganda.
Please make an effort to pack light. Keep in mind you will be responsible to carry your own luggage through the airport. No one will have free hands to help you carry extra or excessive luggage and there will not be luggage carts available in the Uganda airport.
Please keep a copy of your passport in each bag of luggage. Right now I still have everyone’s passports and I have made copies of the passports that I can make available to you.
Please take a picture of each piece of luggage. This will help in the event you luggage is lost or misplaced. Instead of describing your luggage you can show the airline what it looks like.
Carryon and Personal Bag:
Please note we will not have access to our checked bags while in Qatar. It is therefore important to bring a carryon bag with clothes and toiletries to be used during our two layovers (one going, one coming home).
Everyone will be able to take two carryon bags in addition to their checked bags. One is a carryon bag limited to 15 pounds, the other is a personal bag (like a purse or a backpack). They may ask to gate check our carryon bags. It is therefore important to bring at least one change of close in your personal bag in case the airline loses checked bags and gate checked bags.
Food:
Everyone needs to have money for food during travel to and from Uganda. At least 5 days worth of eating out/airport meals etc. We will likley go to dinner in Doha Qatar during one of our layovers. This may be a nicer/sit down meal.
We will begin providing meals once we arrive in Fort Portal. Most of our meals will be provided by the guesthouse where we will be staying. Some meals will be eaten at local restaurants or provided by the Cashes. It is important to realize meals are not easily adjusted and locals often go long periods between meals. If you are picky about what you will eat and not eat, or about when
Water:
We should not drink the water while in Uganda. Drinking the water can cause nasty stomach problems that we don’t want to deal with while traveling. We will buy bottled water for everyone.
Game Park:
We will be visiting the Queen Elizabeth Game Park while we are in Uganda. This will cost an additional $100 per adult, and $75 for children 12 and under. Please bring enough money to cover your cost while in the Game Park.
Packing List:
Below are some items to consider when packing for Uganda. Please note we added a few items since the last time we sent this list.
Girls:
skirts (that hit the knee or longer) for church and time in the village
Jeans or lightweight trousers (capris) for travel and around town
Shorts for the game park if you want
Swimsuit
Short sleeve shirts (tank tops/sleeveless shirts are fine too)
Long sleeve light weight shirt (1) to layer if evenings are cool
Rain jacket
Hat (the equator sun is ‘heavy’ so if you like a hat, it is recommended but not imperative)
Sturdy tennis shoe/walking shoe, sturdy/comfy sandal or flip flops, lightweight house shoe or flipflop
Boys:
long trousers (jeans, lightweight travel pants etc)
Shorts for game park
Swimsuit
(young boys ages 12 and younger can wear shorts even in the village…but teens andadults should wear long trousers when in the village and around town. Short pants are seen as clothing for children and so when teaching or ministering it is better received when wearing long trousers.)
Short sleeve shirts
Long sleeve shirt for layering when cool
Rain Jacket
Hat
Sturdy shoe (tennis shoe/walking shoe), light weight shoe (sandal/flip flop)
Everyone:
Towel (most guesthouses provide towels but it is nice to have a personal one with you)
Bug spray
Sun screen
Personal meds (bring any prescriptions you may need along with over the counter meds you commonly use—tylenol/ibuprofen, pepto, gasx, Benadryl, motion sickness meds of choice, nasal spray; don’t stress over this stuff as we can get meds here, but nice to have meds you recognize if you aren’t feeling well)
Toiletries(ladies be aware that power is sporadic and some guesthouses run off of solar inverters so blow dryers and the like may not be usable here every day—braided hair, head bands, and towel drying hair are good expectations to prepare for)
Baby wipes (in absence of water nice to have something to clean off with)
Bible
Journal
Snacks (we call it ‘mental health food’; your experience will be very new and having some comfort snacks to enjoy in your room can be a blessing)
Camera for the game park
Flashlight/Headlamp
Backpack to carry snacks, water, and other items during the day.

Power Converter:
The Standard voltage in Uganda is higher than what our US electronics are designed to handle. This means you will need a power converter for anything you want to plug in while in Uganda.
Uganda uses type G plugs at 240V, 50Hz’
USA uses Type B plugs at 120V, 50Hz’
Please be careful when selecting a power converter as some only change the plug configuration without stepping down the voltage. I have provided a link below of the adapter I plan on buying. $40 on amazon.

Teaching Children:
There will be at least 3 opportunities to teach children (unless something changes). Once or twice on Thursday when we visit the two schools. Friday in Kitumba (Jeff anticipates lots of children to gather in Kitumba). And once on Saturday at Town Church.
There will also be a few opportunities to teach and preach to adults, with one of those including a training session (that we will be leading) on how to teach children. Jerry will be assigning teaching and preaching responsibilities next week while I am at camp.

You may want to set up an online giving profile where friends and families can donate with a credit card online (and through social media). There are several sights available with different fees ranging from 3% to 8%. If you do set up an online crowd funding account, you may wish to put a link in your letter for people who want to donate using a credit card.

Helpful Information:
Currency Exchange:
Travelers are encouraged to obtain dollar bills newer than 2003 for the best exchange rate. Older or torn bills will fetch lower value at all Forex Bureaus or may not be accepted outside Kampala. Small dollar bills in the denominations of $20, $10, $5, $1 and coins also fetch low value on Ugandan market. It’s therefore important that you carry newer bills in the denominations of $50 and $100 for the best exchange rates in Uganda
